Iason Kastanis graduated from Middlesex University in 2001 with first class honours majoring in Mathematics and Applied Computing. He received the award for outstanding performance from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications for outstanding performance.

He continued his studies in University College London with a Masters in Science degree in Vision Imaging and Virtual Environments.

Following that a scholarship for a PhD supervised by Prof. Simon Arrdige in the medical imaging group was offered. The medical imaging group later became part of Centre for Medical Image Computing, one of the leading centres in the UK and very strong in the international level. The PhD was part of the interdisciplinary project MIAS IRC and its aim was to investigate novel methods for reconstructing cardiac images in MRI from highly limited data. It was an application of inverse problem theory and constrained optimization methods in medical imaging.

After submitting his PhD in 2006 Iason began working in Dexela as a scientific programmer In Dexela he developed a commercial iterative reconstructor for 3D x-ray digital breast tomosynthesis for the early detection of cancer. He implemented the method for a commercial product, fullfilling the requirements of speed of execution as well as robustness.

After finishing the commercial implementation in Dexela Iason left the UK in 2008 and returned to academia in Barcelona, Spain joining Prof. Mel Slater's group then based at Universitat Polytechnica de Catalunia. He is employed as postdoctoral research fellow in the european project MIMICS. MIMICS combines virtual reality and robotics with the purpose of motivating patients in neuro-rehabilitation. Iason developed a machine learning library used in the project, as well as various experiments within the event-lab. Iason is currently employed at the University of Barcelona, where event-lab has been based since the autumn of 2008, and is an honorary research associate at the department of Computer Science in UCL.
